2014 Germany Trip - Luther's Monument (Lutherdenkmal)

Location: Worms, Germany

Itinerary and full experience of my visit to Germany can be accessed through the link below:

Apart from Worms Cathedral, how else would I know about the existence of Worms? That would be from history books when I need to study for my exam, of course, especially on the section of European history. It never failed to mention that Martin Luther was one of the triggering points of Reformation and the emergence of Protestantism, it involved both the Diet of Worms and Diet of Speyer, the latter of which was also one of my visited city from the post here.

Luther Monument is the largest monument dedicated to the Reformation movement.

It was no surprise that Worms has a Luther Monument dedicated to the man himself. The Luther Monument is the world's largest monument dedicated to Reformation. Despite the name, the monument contained more than just Luther himself - it was laid out on a raised square dais alongside various other statues, each with its own relation to the Reformation movement.

Fotoeins has a great webpage dedicated to this monument, highlighting each statue's purpose and symbolic meaning. Another website with great info is from Vanderkrogt.

Luther Monument from a different view

Friedrich III, elector of Saxony and benefactor of Luther. He was the one who arranged for Luther's safety when the latter left Worms after the Edict of Worms.

Luther stood at the center pillar, surrounded by 4 others who were directly related to the Reformation movement in England, Czech, Italy and France during their days.

Impressive as the monument was, it took little time to circle and examine it. I strolled near it to explore and found a nice garden. Spring was in the air and the flowers were just blooming, I believed it would be wonderful if I visited Worms a few weeks later.

Luther's Monument is a relatively recent statue in the city's history - it was inaugurated in 1868, at least 2 centuries after the Diet of Worms. It is not difficult to find, most probably one would pass by it on the way from the train station to the city center.
